We obtained our 501(c)(3) in 2011 in order to be as transparent as possible for our supporters. We will continue to seek improving the openness of this organization and please contact us with any questions you may have.

About Us

Our Founder

Scares That Care was founded by Joe Ripple. A retired Baltimore County, Maryland, Police Detective who in 2007 started this organization as a tribute to the daughter of a fellow officer who succumbed to a terminal illness..

Our History

The charity originally started with the goal of raising $10,000 per year for organizations such as Make-A-Wish and the Kennedy Krieger Institute.

After several successful campaigns, the charity became more formalized in 2011 as a 501(c)(3) and established the Board of Directors.

The mission originally was designed to help those fighting breast cancer or childhood illness.  This was then expanded by horror legend Kane Hodder as he asked us to take over his burn survivor program.

Our Mission

As a 100% volunteer organization, we are focused to fight the REAL MONSTERS of childhood illness, burns and breast cancer by helping families who are experiencing these extraordinary hardships cope with the financial burden by raising and providing $10,000 per recipient family.

sponsored families

Child Recipient - Natalya

Being a single mom is tough, but rewarding job. Having a child with Marfan Syndrome, who'll need a lifetime of required care, is something that requires lots of love and support. Ashley Adams and her Daughter Natalya are recipient candidates for 2020. Please welcome them to our family.

Breast Cancer Warrior - Laura

Laura is Breast Cancer Warrior. Challenged by cancer that’s affecting her lymph nodes, she has endured surgeries and chemo. She has not been able to work, and has three children, one in college, a 13 year old and an 11 year old. Despite the challenges she faces, she is a fighter and an advocate for the LGBTQ+ Community, known in Arkansas as “The Lady in the Rainbow Dress.” Now, this warrior needs OUR help. 2020 is HER year. Please welcome her to our family.

Burn Survivor - Patricia

Patricia was clearing and burning brush when the fire burst.  As she went to move a nearby gasoline can out of the way, it exploded during the attempt. This accident has left her covered in 2nd and 3rd degree burns on her entire right side.

We are honored to have Patricia as our 2020 Burn Survivor recipient.
